hu lu ping 葫芦瓶 double-gourd bottle.
This bottle vase, formed by a smaller bulb surmounting a larger one, usually has a short neck and a small mouth. Its origin can be traced back to the pottery gourd bottle from the Banpo site of the Yangshao culture and the Shijia culture and to the polychrome bottles made in the Tang dynasty. Gourd bottles were produced in Longquan, Zhejiang province, and in Hutian, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, during the Song and Yuan dynasties. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, large quantities were made in Jingdezhen, decorated with underglaze blue, with the wu cai* palette, sometime gilt, and with various monochrome glazes.
