This two-part series takes China’s first phenomenal 1980s suspense-adventure film, Mysterious Buddha, alongside its derivative mass-media product—the "cinematic book" (ciné-roman)—as the point of departure for visual archaeology and formal deconstruction. The artist directly confronts the fissure between "motion pictures" and "still images" within the cinematic medium. Through the temporal displacement of moving images and the static montage of classical printmaking formats, the work initiates a cross-media dialogue that spans over forty years of historical landscapes and centuries of visual grammar systems.

Double-Voiced Poem

  • Year: 2026
  • Medium:
    Ciné-roman (cinematic novel).
    multi-channel 4K video installation, colour, sound;
    10-12 Photographs,Black and white inkjet print;
  • Location: Ya'an, Kangding, China.

The Double-Voiced Poem (Liangsheng Shi) takes two poems—one in Yi and the other in Tibetan—as its narrative thread. It recounts the encounter between the director-narrator "I" and two young student-poets of Tibetan and Yi ethnicity, Gaisang and Abi, during a location scouting trip across the historic Xikang region, as well as the events that subsequently unfold.
In The Double-Voiced Poem, the artist directs their inquiry toward the dynamic, kinetic format of the cinematic novel(Ciné-roman). The centerpiece of the entire project is the cinematic novel At Jinfeng Temple, which serves as the first movement of this three-act structure. It is presented alongside Hold Him from Behind (a triptych photographic light box), Xikang (a text-image journal), and Half a Poem (a multi-channel video installation).
Beyond the visual dimension, the artist leverages linguistic diversity to construct a rich contextual narrative encompassing the geography, history, and multicultural tapestry across China’s vast landscape. The dialogues within the cinematic novel are performed in Nuosu, Tibetan, Standard Mandarin, and three distinct regional accents of Southwestern Mandarin (Sichuanese).

After 'A Kiss After Drink' is a work that discusses intimate relationships, consisting of two continuous romantic stories: A Kiss After Drink which adapted from Ling Shuhua's 1925 short story of the same name and original screenplay Since Then.
A Kiss After Drink is a visual script shot on 16mm film and ultimately presented as photographic lightboxes. Its narrative is adapted from Ling Shuhua's 1925 short story of the same title. Telling a tale of passion and desire, freedom and fidelity, the story is regarded as a quintessential exemplar of women's emerging erotic consciousness and expression during the May Fourth era. The artist set the filming location at the wartime site in Leshan where Ling Shuhua relocated with National Wuhan University during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Leshan was also the historical origin of her correspondence with the eminent British literary icon Virginia Woolf—a locus that subtly embeds Ling Shuhua's own romantic history.
Since Then serves as a continuation of A Kiss After Drink. Set in Shanghai and structured in three acts, it unfolds the story sparked by a married couple watching the film A Kiss After Drink. The work is comprised of a three-channel video installation alongside a triptych of still photography.

During the 2022 Shanghai lockdown, the Chinese government could take people away from their homes for centralized quarantine at any moment in the name of epidemic prevention. All of this was carried out without any legal documents or written procedures, leaving absolutely no trace today, as if it had never happened. No one even saw what the people who came to their doors looked like (as they were completely enveloped in full-body hazmat suits), nor did anyone know who they actually were.
Based on these accounts, the artist fabricated a murder case — a lounge singer kills an intruder and, naturally, will ultimately be convicted. Her fate, much like that of Shanghai, comes to a sudden and jarring halt.

The Bathroom is a highly conceptual & poetical interpretation of the seminal novel by the celebrated Belgian author Jean-Philippe Toussaint of the same name. An abstract life led to the conception of the latter and contemplation of the themes implied by the literary work led to the conception of a visual extrapolation upon the themes which are predominant in a novel which delves into the momentum and psyche of our times.
