Before 2010, Cao focused primarily on visual media, producing works such as the ciné-roman (cinematic novel) The Bathroom (The Box Season 4, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, UK, 2011) and the ciné-roman Earthquake (Contemporary Istanbul, 2013). Together with pianist Zhang Jialin and cellist Song Zhao from the Central Conservatory of Music, he co-founded the audio-visual ensemble Shadow Trio, staging the concert Relative Shadows at the Concert Hall of the Central Conservatory of Music in 2008.

He later studied under Prof. Ni Yibin (National University of Singapore / Shanghai International Studies University), participating in the construction of the Multimodal Corpus of Chinese Auspicious Images (MCCAI) and co-authoring the research paper Creating a Lens of Chinese Culture: A Multimodal Dataset for Chinese Pun Rebus Art Understanding (Findings of Association for Computational Linguistics: 2025).

Since 2020, his practice has gradually shifted toward exploring the relationships between mixed media and physical space, with themes largely revolving around his personal lived experiences:

曹夢芹是一位出生在國營樂山造紙廠的三線建設子女，現工作生活於上海，肄業於新加坡 Ngee Ann Polytechnic 微電子專業，曾就職於上海外國語大學語料庫研究院。

曹夢芹在 2010 年以前主要專注於影像媒介，完成有電影小説《浴室》（The Box Season 4，阿伯裡斯特威斯藝術中心，英國，2011）；電影小説《地震》（伊斯坦佈爾當代藝術博覽會，2013）。與中央音樂學院的鋼琴家張佳林、大提琴家宋昭共同創立了音畫組合“陰影三重奏”（2008年於中央音樂學院音樂廳呈獻《相對陰影》音樂會。之後師從倪亦斌教授（新加坡國立大學 / 上海外國語大學），參與建構了《中國傳統吉祥寓意圖像多模態語料庫》（MCCAI），並聯合髮表研究論文 Creating a Lens of Chinese Culture: A Multimodal Dataset for Chinese Pun Rebus Art Understanding（Association for Computational Linguistics 2025 年刊）。

2020 年開始作品逐漸轉向綜合媒介與物理空間關繫的探索，其主題多圍繞其自身經曆展開，有反映包含自己出生的家族史項目《阿拉一家門》（2025）。有以自身疾病爲媒介的表演性醫療行爲作品《身體敘事與多模態重構：一個強直性脊柱炎患者與醫生共生關繫的敘事醫學實踐》（2026）。有以多模態語料庫爲創作媒介，探討民間信仰與飲食曆史的論文電影《藥王洞計劃》（與中國社會科學院曆史所的藝術史學者張翀合作，2026）；集錦攝影《須彌妙光》（策展人王懿泉，2023，希美藝術，上海）與《園野佛踪》（2020，佳作書局798，北京）。有以情感經曆爲藍本的攝影小説《<酒後>之後》（入圍 2025 年集美·阿爾勒國際攝影季“髮現獎”單元），三幕式電影小説《兩生詩》（2025），短片《綠珠》（2026）；有以 2022 年的上海爲背景的多頻影像裝置《Ain’t Misbehavin’》（2023，OFOTO&ANART Gallery，上海），《盲人摸像》（2024，OFOTO&ANART Gallery，上海）。
